Egypt has produced many international soccer players. Note that football is the most popular game internationally and Egypt has played at various competitive levels. This country features among the top ten football countries in Africa according to FIFA rankings. But do you know who are the top players from Egypt are? Although they are many, these are some of the players whose contribution to Egypt’s football can’t go unnoticed.

Mohammed Salah-Liverpool FC

From international to local media, Moh Salah as he is famously known has become a household name. The Liverpool FC player who was born in 1992 plays as a forward in the premier league. He is known globally for his dribbling and finishing speed.

Salah started his youth career in Ittihad Basyoun, Othmason Tanta, and El Mokawloon between 2004 and 2010. He later started his senior career at El Mokawloon and Basel between 2010 and 2014. From there, he joined Chelsea in 2014, before moving to Fiorentina and Roma on loan in 2015 and 2016 respectively.

His move to Liverpool has been one of the highlights of his career. For instance, he scored the second goal and helped Liverpool win 4-1 against Norwich city. Moh Salah has won several awards during his career. The latest ones include the 2018/19 African Player of the Year, 2018 PFA Players’ Player of the Year, 2018 FIFA Puskas Award, and 2019 Premier League Golden Boot award.

Moh Salah has significantly helped Egypt excel in various competitions. He led the way by scoring five goals during the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. With 58 international caps and 37 international goals, there is no doubt that Salah is one of the top Egyptian soccer players.

Mohamed Elneny

You can’t mention the top Egyptian soccer players without Elneny closing the top 5 list. He is considered as a force to behold thanks to his tactful moves. Born in 1992, Elneny began his youth career in Al Ahly and Al Mokawloon. From there, he played in Al Mokawloon senior team before joining Basel on loan in 2013.

Elneny, thereafter, signed for Basel in 2013 until 2016. During this period, he scored 5 goals and made a total of 76 game appearances. His career then hit a new level when he joined Arsenal in 2016. During his time at Arsenal, he continued to show his prowess having won the Player of the Month Award and Man of the Match.

As from 2019, the Egyptian joined Besiktas on a season-long loan. Note that this offer also comes with an optional buyout clause.

Amr Medhat Warda

Amr Medhat Warda has had a thriving football career and there’s no doubt he’s one of the treasured Egyptian footballers. Born in1993, the winger and attacking midfielder began his career in 2011, playing for the youth side of Al Ahly. He then proceeded to join the senior team from 2012 to 2015. Between 2015 and 2018, Warda has played for several clubs including Al-Ittihad on loan, Panetolikos, PAOK, and Atromitos on loan.

His international career started officially when he played for Egypt against Zambia in 2015. As an attacking midfielder, Warda played for 27 minutes during the FIFA 2018 World Cup qualifiers in Russia. His physical prowess, as well as technical ability, are some of the reasons that have made him one of the top soccer players in Egypt. Although he has 20 international caps, he still hasn’t scored an international goal. Currently, Warda is playing for EAL on a loan.

Mohamed Abdelshafy

This Egyptian footballer began his career playing for Zamalek between 2000 and 2003. His senior career started at ENPPI in 2003 until 2005. From there, he moved to Ghazl El-Mehalla, Zamalek, Al-Ahli, and Al-Fateh on loan.
Abdel’s international career started in 2009 when he joined the Egyptian National Football team.

He played in 2010’s Africa Cup of Nations where he participated in several matches. From 2019, Abdel started playing for Zamalek SC. The highlight of his career was when he was named in Egypt’s 2018 preliminary squad during the World Cup in Russia.

Ali Gabr Mossad

Ali Gabr was born in 1989 and is one of the best center-backs in Egypt. The professional footballer’s career features him playing for Ismaily as a youth. He later joined Ismaily’s senior team in 2007 until 2012. During this period, he made a total of 92 appearances.

The 30-year old footballer later joined Al Ittihad between 2012 and 2014 where he made a total of 27 appearances. From there, he joined Zamalek until 2018. While he was here, Ali Gabr made a total of 99 appearances and scored 3 goals.

In January 2018, he joined West Bromwich Albion on a 6-month loan. However, West Bromwich Albion didn’t sign the defender permanently after the loan. Ali Gabr later joined the Egyptian side, Pyramids where he is currently playing. He has made around 20 appearances for the team.

Ahmed Hegazi

Born in 1991, Hegazi is definitely one of the top Egyptian soccer players. The professional footballer who plays for the Egyptian national team is also a center back for West Bromwich Albion. His career officially started in 2009, when he made his debut with the Ismaily, an Egyptian Premier League Club.

Hegazi has made a total of 38 premier league appearance and has scored two goals for West Bromwich Albion. He has also represented his national team in various football matches including the African Youth Championship in 2011, Summer Olympics in 2012, and the 2018 World Cup.

Samy Sayed Morsy

This midfielder has been a crucial pillar for the Egyptian National Team. Morsy was born in 1991 and he began his youth football career at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Port Vale until 2009. From there, he started his senior career in Port Vale until 2013 when he joined Chesterfield.

During his time in Chesterfield, he scored a total of 9 goals having made 99 appearances. He later joined Wigan Athletic in 2016, scoring a total of 5 goals after making 114 appearances. Currently, he is playing for Barnsley on loan. His most competitive outing so far was in Egypt’s world cup in Russia.

Mahmoud Hassan

Born in 1994, Hassan is currently a winger playing for the premier league club, Aston Villa. He is commonly referred to as Trezeguet, a nickname he got from David Trezeguet, a former French footballer. Hassan initially started his professional football career from Al Ahly. At just 18 years, he helped Al Ahly win their CAF Champions League in 2012 and subsequently in 2013.

From there, he made a permanent move to Anderlecht in Belgium in 2015. He later moved to Kasimpasa – a Turkish club after struggling to establish himself with the Belgian team. Playing with the Turkish side has been the highlight of his football career.

Hassan went on to become the top Egyptian score in Turkey. Hasan has joined Aston Villa just recently, on July 2019. He has already made 4 premium league appearances and has played 100 percent among the starting eleven.

Ahmed Elmohamady

Born in 1987, Ahmed is also another top Egyptian soccer player with an international profile. He started playing professional football as a youth in 2003 when he joined Ghazl El-Mahalla. At the age of 17, he was playing in the first team and he later joined ENPPI.

It’s worth noting that although Ahmed had started his football career as a striker, he joined ENPPI and started playing as a right-winger. His first international appearance was in 2007 when he played for the Egyptian National Team.

Ahmed first joined the premier league after joining the Blackburn Rovers in 2008. He later joined Sunderland in 2010 and made 36 appearances for the team. Between 2012 and 2013, Ahmed played for Hull City on a loan before fully joining them from 2013 to 2017.

During this period, he made 150 appearances and scored 7 goals. From 2017, Ahmed has been playing for Aston Villa. He has already made a total of 81 appearances with 2 goals.

Essam El-Hadary

El-Hadary has always said that he wanted to be a footballer from a young age. So, there is no doubt that he’s one of the most outstanding Egyptian players. He could not even hide his football interests from his parents. Born in 1973, the 46-year-old is one of the best and oldest goalkeepers in the world.

El-Hadary spent a huge portion of his professional career in Al Ahly. He’s one of the top Egyptian soccer players who helped Al Ahly win 8 premier league titles in Egypt. Note that he was also involved in 4 CAF champion leagues and 4 Egyptian Super Cups.

El-Hadary has had a great career and his professional profile is extensive. Since his debut in 1996, he has made over 150 international appearances. El-Hadary played Ismaily, an Egyptian Premier League side between 2018 and 2019. He recently joined Nogoom side in 2019 where he has made a total of 3 appearances.

Note: El-Hadary retired from international football in 2018. This is after the Egyptian made 159 international appearances for his nation.

Abdallah Mahmoud El Said

He started his outstanding football career in Ismaily as a youth in. Born in 1985, the 34-year old is one of the best-attacking midfielders in Egypt. His senior career started in Ismaily from 2005 until 2011. From there, he joined AI Ahly from 2011 to 2018. During his period here, he made a total of 154 appearances and scored a total of 50 goals.

In 2018, El-Said joined KuPS on loan and before he proceeded to join AI-Ahli. With 41 international caps, this refined footballer boasts of 6 international goals. Currently, the Egyptian is playing for Pyramids after joining them in January 2019.
